# What useful nanoscale things are patternless? This is an important question because one of the answers to [[What is positional chemistry good for?]] may be situations where the resulting output has no pattern. [[Mixing and shaking is great for arbitrary arrangements of atoms when those atoms are in a pattern]] but is less useful when those atoms and molecules are not in a pattern. Logic junctions might be one example of this — [[Absolute and arbitrary orientation of single-molecule shapes]] suggests that bipolar junction transistors need full 6-DOF orientation. ### Related * [[We need new design methods for positional chemistry systems]] [Web URL for this note](http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/What+useful+nanoscale+things+are+patternless) [Comment on this note](http://via.hypothes.is/http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/What+useful+nanoscale+things+are+patternless)
