# What does it mean for a research ecosystem to be healthy? Healthy ecosystems are one of those [[Nebulous]] definitions that are best described by shared characteristics, not by a tight definition. * [[Healthy R+D orgs feel like they have very smooth project rampups with high ceilings]] -- tying * [[Ideally corporate R+D enables targeted dicking around]] * [[Ideally corporate R+D enables work on a general purpose technology before it’s specialized]] * Obviously some of it is that they produce good work, but then the question is “good work as judged by whom?” And also that work is a lagging indicator * Something about tight connections but also paths in for newcomers * Something about the viability of new ideas * Something about not being captured by outside interests * “Smart people doing good work” <!-- #questions --> [Web URL for this note](http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/What+does+it+mean+for+a+research+ecosystem+to+be+healthy) [Comment on this note](http://via.hypothes.is/http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/What+does+it+mean+for+a+research+ecosystem+to+be+healthy) <!-- {BearID:F7395B09-4E62-44CA-A638-5D468EFE2ED9-577-00001302F0A33AA6} -->
