# There is a tension around industry veterans doing a new thing
On the one hand, you want people with deep experience in a technical area, who have a lot of finger knowledge of what works and what doesn’t, know all the players, etc.
On the other hand, people who have that level of experience tend to be fairly conservative with respect to new ideas. This conservatism comes from two places: there’s a selection effect where people who are ok with the current system stay in the current system to get experience and the people who chafe exit; when you’ve been in a system for a long time, you see a lot of things fail and understand why it is the way it is, so it’s much easier to see how a new thing could potentially fail.
