# Structuring knowledge is expensive In order to structure knowledge an expert must encode knowledge that’s in their head, conforming to an external structure. [[People do not like conforming to external structures]] . Getting people to create more structured knowledge than the norm is hard both because it requires them to put knowledge in a form they’re not used to and [[the more structured the knowledge the more effort it requires]] [[Mihai Surdeanu]] claims that his research group has created a piece of software that can enable an expert to create a grammar in real time which may address this problem if the structure you want is a knowledge graph based on an ontology and a grammar. Unconfirmed what TRL as of February 2020 Any form of communication is structured knowledge in a way. Incentivizing humans to put knowledge in a different structure than they’re used to doing. Papers dominate because people are used to treating them and they are the established way to move your career forward. The [[Polyplexus]] project is attempting to motivate people by making the platform part of a pipeline for grants. The ontology line of research just straight up paid people to help create ontologies. I haven’t seen any attempts work to get people to create structured data without paying them. The difficulty and cost getting people to create structured public knowledge makes people naturally turn to the approach of [[Using computers to structure unstructured data]] . This might have something to do with [[Context is important and underrated for knowledge transfer]] The Underlay ([[Whitepaper - The Future of Knowledge - The Underlay]] ) is another project to try to structure knowledge. [[People have tried many different attempts to get experts to encode public knowledge in ways that make it easier to connect the pieces]] <!-- #evergreen --> [Web URL for this note](http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/Structuring+knowledge+is+expensive) [Comment on this note](http://via.hypothes.is/http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/Structuring+knowledge+is+expensive)
