# Precise Communication is careful with pronouns
It is easy to start flinging around pronouns. There are two reasons to be careful with pronouns - one reason is to not confuse the reader ([[Communication can be designed to minimize cognitive load]]) but the less obvious and perhaps more important reason is to make sure you actually know what you’re talking about. It’s so easy to write “This is …” but then if you ask yourself “what am I actually referring to?” the thought is incredibly fuzzy. Forcing yourself to disambiguate the pronoun also forces yourself to precisely think about what you’re talking about.
One rule of thumb is to always couple a pronoun at the beginning of sentence with whatever it’s referring to - ie. “This process …” instead of “This …”
