# People often use uncertainty when they mean unpredictability *Warning: semantics* [[Knightian Uncertainty]] and risk are important technical-ish concepts that can help decision making. However (reasonably) people often use them to talk about any situation where it’s not certain what will happen. Unpredictability is a nice unclaimed word that describes both uncertain and risky situations with none of the technical baggage. ### Related - [[Risk needs a metric]] <!-- #stub --> [Web URL for this note](http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/People+often+use+uncertainty+when+they+mean+unpredictability) [Comment on this note](http://via.hypothes.is/http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/People+often+use+uncertainty+when+they+mean+unpredictability) <!-- {BearID:0C10038E-2FDE-45E7-87CF-ABB6C07072BF-3985-0000825176CCA3BF} -->
