# Is-Ought distinction
When talking about how the world works, it’s important to distinguish between whether the world *is* some way or whether the world *ought* to be that way.
It’s tricky because people’s perception of the world can actually affect how the world is, so asserting that the world is a way can lock that in and people who think it ought to be difference can reasonably condemn publicly calling out how it is.
At the same time, focusing only on how the world ought to be can blind you to the realities of how the world is.
