In academia more grant money leads to more power

Because there’s a cap on profit, more grant money goes to either hiring more people or getting better equipment. Lab size and equipment is absolutely how professors flaunt.

Weirdly, this indirect power accumulation (as opposed to direct money accumulation) resembles both communism and startups. In communism governments luxury and agency are coupled to a position and in the world of startups, you can’t spend money from a massive funding round directly but you can get a luxurious office, perks, business travel, etc.
