Disambiguating stagnation arguments

It ‘feels’ like things have stagnated and GDP does not seem to be growing as quickly as it once did. But what do we actually mean and where are the problems.

There are three main theories of stagnation and for each of those arguments there are different timescales to consider.

  • If you’re looking at the 0-5 year timescale, you care about commercialization and dispersion.
  • If you’re looking at the 5-15 year timescale, you care about The (idea) valley of death and Mission-oriented research. Harnessing phenomena we roughly understand, integrating it into useful systems. This still requires a lot of research but focused on results.
  • If you’re looking at the 15+ year timescale, you care about exploring new phenomena.
Arguably there is stagnation at each of these timescales.
