# Anything besides taste forces you into monism and utilitarianism Without depending on taste, the only way to judge things is with some sort of metric. If you’re using a metric, you are automatically in a stance that says “this is the most important thing” which ==handwavingly== translates to monism. This utilitarian approach is extreme, so you might reasonably say “no, multiple things matter, so let’s use multiple metrics.” But then how do you compare them? Either you figure out a conversion factor and are back to a single metric (monism + utilitarianism) or you’re left with pluralism, and taste.
