# A list of Knowledge generating activities This list is meant to capture both the abstract and concrete “moves” that people do to expand the [[Knowledge frontier]] * Knowledge compression. This of course, can fall into reductionist fallacies. Is this different than knowledge distillation? Maybe distillation has to do with practices or tacit knowledge. * Knowledge formalization. * Operationalizing the knowledge in a serious context of use and making small adjustments ([[Learning by doing]]) * Understanding the dynamics of the personalities nominally working in a similar area * Figuring out medium-term exciting possibilities * Running interference for people doing really weird things * Scaling the production of a thing (Industrializing a thing) * Scaling the production of a thing by automating parts of the production process * Scaling the production of a thing by mechanizing parts of the production process * Scaling the production of a thing by parallelizing * Making a research artifact so it can exist outside the lab that built it. * This can look like making code presentable or putting a made device in a box that lets it be transported and handled [[Research organizations have core activities that act as discrete units]] ### Related * [[Different axes of where research gets done in the US]] * [[Research has many orthogonal and non orthogonal classification axes]] [Web URL for this note](http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/A+list+of+Knowledge+generating+activities) [Comment on this note](http://via.hypothes.is/http://notes.benjaminreinhardt.com/A+list+of+Knowledge+generating+activities)
